Antler Chandeliers

8 questions to ask while shopping for antler chandeliers.
by: Sara Brown

Like any other purchase, you'll want to be sure you're getting a quality product when you buy your antler chandelier. Here are eight questions to ask while shopping around.

1) What grade of antler do you use?
Remember: Antlers are graded based on how long it’s been since they’ve been shed, with 1 being the most recently shed (and best quality) and 3 being shed the longest time ago (and the most fragile). Most companies make chandeliers from all three grades, so make sure you’re aware of what you’ll be getting. Also, if you opt for a grade-three chandelier, be sure to check for visible cracks and other signs of decay.

2) Do you use natural or artificial antlers?
Since artificial antlers look so much like the real thing, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference. A lot of companies offer both, so make sure to ask before buying.

3) Does the wiring run through the center of the antler or is it exposed on top of the antlers?
For a seamless look, you’ll want to make sure the wiring is run through the center of the antlers and not exposed.

4) How do you join the antlers together? (Are they sturdy?)
The antlers should be pinned together with threaded steel dowels. Also, the antlers should be attached in more than one place, resulting in a strong web-like structure.

5) What types of light socket covers do you offer?
Most companies offer two choices, metal covers and cast antler covers. This is an aesthetic option that’s up to you.

6) Do you charge extra for things like additional chain and wire if I have a tall ceiling?
Most companies will include a standard chain along with the price of the chandelier, although you may be charged extra for longer lengths.

7) How do you ship the pieces and how much do you charge for crating and shipping?
The most important thing is to make sure the chandelier will be properly packaged. From there, you’ll have to decide if the shipping cost fits into your budget.

8) Do you offer an unconditional guarantee for any malfunction? Will you pay for the packing and shipping if I have to send it back?
Of course, the answer to both of these questions should be “yes.”
