Think Green, Save Green
“Were you born in a barn? Close the door!”
“What are you doing, trying to light up Herminie?”
“Turn the heat down, and put some socks on!”

As a teenager, these are just a few of the phrases I can recall my parents saying until they were blue in the face—chiding, yet loving, reminders to act responsibly. I had to close the front door behind me when the air conditioning was on; turn off the lights as I left a room, so I didn’t waste enough electricity to illuminate our nearest town, which was more than 5 miles away; and generate my own body heat so I didn’t blast the furnace and waste oil (my parents rely on an oil drum they refill each year).

Were they trying to save the environment? Not consciously, but as our society takes a sharp turn down the “green” path, I realize they did tap into a very important concept long before its time: They wanted to conserve energy, if for no other reason than to save money.

You may not know it, but by choosing a log home, you’ve already turned a shade of green. If built properly, log homes can be extremely energy efficient. That’s why we peppered this, our floorplans issue, with a bevy of environmentally sound information to up the ante. In addition to our feature story, “Go Green” on page 60, you’ll read about how one couple made the very conscious decision to infuse their home with Earth-friendly design and products. “Natural Beauty” starts on page 68. And whether leading an eco life is part of your agenda or not, we all want to own the house of our dreams. Turn to page 36 to see how one stock floorplan was tweaked to suit four families’ very different needs. (Hint: it’s less expensive than a custom plan, too.)

So, no matter whether you align your politics with Al Gore or George Bush, we all can benefit from saving a little George Washington, and we just might save the planet in the process.
